Abstract

Articles based on starch insol. in water, comprise (i) a phase comprising destructurised starch in the form of particles of ave. no. dia. below 1N; (ii) a phase comprising ethylene-acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer; (iii) a phase comprising IPN (interpenetrated network) obtd. from the interaction between starch and EVA copolymer; and opt. (iv) a water content lower than 6 wt.% (0-2 wt.%) calcd. on the total wt. of the 3 phases. The articles are prepd. by mixing starch and EAA copolymer in wt. ratio 1:9-9:1 (1:4-4:1), water, and opt. urea and/or ammonia, in an extruder heated to 90-150 deg.C, and bringing the water content to a value below 6 wt.%, and opt. ammonia content to below 0.5 wt.%.
