Abstract

A cable comprises two fibres (1,2) coated with and coupled by waterproof material (3) peelable cleanly from the fibres. Strengthening strands (5) run longitudinally over a plastics sheath (4) surrounding the fibres and within an outer plastics sheath (6). The peelable material is pref. partially cured silicone rubber or vinyl resin, the inner sheath is of thermoplastic polyester elastomer and the strands are of polyaramid yarn, with the outer sheath of nylon loaded with glass fibre material. The optical fibres may be twisted together and at least one has two segments joined endwise with the joint spanned by an unjoined part of the other fibre to increase joint strength.
