Abstract
The test device includes a hollow probe assembly with a transducer (21) which creates a sound field in a cavity (23). The sound is coupled from the cavity through a probe (25) to the ear canal (290). The two-piece linear section (252) is chosen so that its dimensions match those of a typical healthy ear canal. Dimensions are quoted for a child's ear. A fraction of the incident sound energy is reflected by the tympanic membrane, stopes and other parts of the middle ear. The amplitude and phase of the reflected wave depend on the complex acoustic impedance of the ear canal and middle ear, which is affected markedly by the presence of effusions. The reflected wave is received by a tip (27) of the probe and passes to a microphone (24) which measures the net sound pressure which is the vector sum of the incident and reflected waves. A frequency sweep generator provides the range of acoustic frequencies required. The amplitude versus frequency plot for a patient with middle ear effusion exhibits a significant dip in the amplitude of the vector sum at a frequency (about 3.5 kilohertz) associated with quarter-wave resonance.
