Abstract

The surgical stapler (10) comprises a shaft (18) movably mounted in a housing (13) for relative longitudinal movement the shaft having a cam surface (25) at an intermediate location within the housing. An anvil (20) is mounted on a distal end of the shaft. An annular knife (29) projects axially from a distal end of the housing towards the anvil, and an annular staple pusher (30) projects axially from the end of the housing towards the anvil and radially outside the knife. An annular member (32) mounts on the housing in alignment with the pusher an annular stapling cartridge (33) having staples. A sleeve (36) is slidably mounted on the housing for movement between an extended position and retracted position. A cam is positioned relative to the cam surface on the sleeve for movement relative the housing in response to continued proximal movement of the anvil towards the knife from the point. The anvil pushes the annular member relative to the pusher to expel staples from a stapling cartridge for stapling of tissue between the anvil and a cartridge on the annular member.
