Abstract

A cutting and joining unit has a first, a second and a third block correspondingly located to hold a head length and a tail length of a tape insert, including a magnetic tape, drawn from an access opening in a working cassette, in front of a front panel. The second and third block, which form a single unit together, can be individually placed alongside the first block by movement parallel to the front panel in a direction normal to the access opening. A gripping member passes above the blocks which are alongside each other to take a length of adhesive tape provided by a feed unit located in front of the front panel while a blade fixed to the gripping member cuts the tape insert or magnetic tape located on the adjacent blocks. Through simultaneous lifting of the blocks the adhesive tape is applied to the joint region. A process for loading cassettes performed by the cutting and joining unit is also described. <IMAGE>
