Abstract

The invention relates to the identification and utilization of peptides which can be synthesized by chemical methods which reproduce and assemble epitopes which are immunologically and specifically reactive with anti-HCV antibodies and which are used in reagents in immunological assays for the detection of such antibodies in the serum or plasma of patients exposed to HCV infection, permitting the preparation of tests with improved sensitivity and specificity characteristics and therefore of greater predictive value. The invention provides new polypeptides having the formula: 1) THR LYS LYS SER GLY GLU ASN 2) ILE ILE PRO ASP ARG GLU VAL LEU TYR ARG GLU PHE ASP GLU 3) SER GLN HIS LEU PRO TYR ILE GLU GLN GLY MET MET LEU ALA 4) ARG GLY SER PRO PRO SER LEU 5) THR ARG HYS ASP SER PRO ASP ALA ASP 6) THR ARG VAL GLU SER GLU ASN LYS VAL and others derived from these by chemical modification, through condensation or conjugation with protein substrates which are effective in facilitating availability for immunological interaction and for immobilization on the insoluble substrates frequently used in immunological assays.
