Abstract
The pellets are heated together with a solid reducing agent (I), in a retort; and the gaseous reaction prods. (II) flow at least partly in co-current with the charge travelling down the retort. The retort is pref. gastight with a gas outlet towards its lower end, via which gas leaves the retort via an equilibrium or via a suction fan causing a negative gas pressure in the retort. A noncombustible gas may be fed into the top, charging end of the retort to form a gastight seal. A high thermal efficiency is achieved. Agent (I) is pref. hard coal and/or reactive coke; and the moisture in the charge pref. forms steam used to make water gas. The pref. retort is located in a vertical shaft furnace below a charging chamber fitted with shutter valves.
