Abstract

The relay includes a piezoelectric bender element (30e) and movable contact (104) mounted on a movable portion of the element and cooperating with stationary contact (61e) proximate the movable contact (104) for selective engagement with it in response to deflection of the bender element. A magnetic circuit holds the contact closed and includes a magnet (22e) stationary pole members (18e,20e) and a pole member (32e) on the movable portion for magnetically adhering the movable portion to a stationary pole member (18e or (20e) until the deflection force of the bender element exceeds the holding force of the magnetic circuit. One of the pole members may be convergingly tapered toward its face and have a face of reduced area relative to the area of the face of its cooperating pole members. A stationary pole member may be adjustably mounted to allow for setting the length of the gap between pole members. An electromagnet may replace the permanent magnet.
