Abstract

The power-assisted, rack-and-pinion steering device includes a variable vol. chamber (12) defined within a cylindrical cavity (9) and facing a piston (11). The piston transforms axial displacement of a rack-engaging helical pinion (5) into displacement of a control valve (15). The chamber contains deformable and incompressible fluid and is isolated from the rest of the cylindrical cavity, and an auxiliary cavity (17), by sealing rings. The pressure within the chamber is sensed by a push rod (18) connected to the valve.
