Abstract
Chromium and proteins are extracted from tannery waste by the following process: the waste is mechanically broken down and treated with alkali to effect hydrolysis, iron filings are partially sepd., the alkaline suspension is filtered under vacuum to separate soluble polypeptides from insoluble chromium hydroxide, and these are purified separately. The polypeptides give high purity proteins and the chromium is obtd. as basic chromium sulphate suitable for use in tanning. Specifically the physical breakdown of tannery waste gives a prod. of millimetric size, and this is treated with Na, K, or Ca hydroxides, pref. at pH 11-12.5 and at a temp. of 95 deg.C or above, for a few minutes. Iron filings and abrasive sand, used in the tanning process, are allowed to settle, and the liq. decanted. This liq. is then filtered to give a chromium hydroxide residue and a filtrate contg. soluble proteins. The process overcomes the difficulties of disposing of tannery waste. The proteins may be used in animal feeds, foliar fertilisers, cosmetics, and for industrial use generally.
