Abstract
Small metering pump for medical purposes is of the type in which a piston is reciprocated inside a cylinder provided with suction and delivery valves. The piston is displaced electromagnetically by a solenoid in axial alignment with the piston. A magnetic armature is fitted to the piston and another one to a delivery valve elements. An electric control circuit produces a to and fro displacement of the piston and opening of valves in sequence. Pref. a permanent magnet is used to retain a valve in a normally-closed position. Pref. the piston is fitted with an armature at each of its axially opposed ends. Each armature is part of a different solenoid and the coils of these two solenoids are wound around opposite ends of the cylinder. Pref. the pump is assembled with reservoir, printed control circuit and timer as a unit for implantation in the living tissue or body cavity of a patient. Used for automatic periodic injection of liq. medicament, e.g. insulin for the treatment of the sugar diabetes. The pump is reliable and troublefree. It can be incorporated in a unit for implantation at reasonable cost.
