Abstract
This is an addn. to 2432765, which described a process for cooling h ot metal parts, esp. castings from a mould, or steel parts or strip leaving a furnace, where the parts travel through min. two cooling zones, the first zone using cooling by radiation and/or convection for the natural structural transformation of the metal parts, and the subsequent cooling zones using progressively stronger cooling by convection and/or evapn. cooling. The first zone is used for cooling down to 720 degrees C for completion of the natural or desired structural transformation whereas the subsequent cooling zones prevent internal or residual stress (lattice distortions) and the cooling follows a convex curve with an increased cooling speed. Used e.g., in the prodn. of nodular graphite cast iron, 90% of the castings cooled by this process and shot-blasted can be directly machined without the necessity for a prior annealing treatment.
