Abstract
Substd. ketones are prepd. by reaction of org. halides with ketones having an active H-atom in the alpha-posn. to the carbonyl gp. in presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and catalysed by a phosphonium salt of formula R3.P.R1X (where R is opt. substd. cyclohexyl; R1 is opt. substd. alkyl, >4C cycloalkyl. >6C aralkyl; X is an anion). High yields can be obtd. without needing to remove water from the reaction mixt., and the NaOH may be used as a soln. in water. The ketones are useful as inters. for Vitamin E and also perfumes.
