Abstract

The engine drives the vehicle through a gearbox (7). An auxiliary gear (5) takes a drive to a hydraulic machine (8) which can work as a pump or a motor. At normal engine operation the hydraulic machine raises the pressure in an oil reservoir (10). When various sensors (19-23) detect that the engine is idling and the oil reservoir is full a solenoid (13) is energised to close the slow running jet (14) in the carburettor and the hydraulic machine works as a motor to drive the vehicle. As soon as full load running is required again the controls operate to reverse the hydraulic machine and restart the internal combustion engine.
