Abstract
Prodn. of hexamethyldisilazane (I) comprises reacting (CH3)3SiCl (II) with gaseous NH3 using as solvent pre-formed (I) at >=1 pref. >=1.5 (1.5-2) wt. pts. per pt. (II). The NH4Cl byproduct is removed by washing, pref. with water, and then the prod. is dried. A reaction vessel is pref. first charged with (I), then (II) and at least a stoichiometric amount of NH3 are introduced simultaneously. Before extraction the mixt. is aged in contact with a little NH3 to remove any residues of (II). (I) is prepd. without need for fractional distillation to remove additional solvents; extraction of NH4Cl is very efficient; volume yields are improved, and yields are typically 96%.
