Prepn. of esters of formulae R-COOCH2R' (I) or R'-COOCH2R (II) (where R and R' are each 1-16C alkyl radical or together from a cycloaliphatic ring contg. up to 7C atoms) comprises reacting an ether R-O-R' or an ester RCOOR' or R'COOR with CO and H2 at 150-350 degrees C, 50-1000 atmos. press. in the presence of a catalyst contg. a Ru carbonyl and, as promoter, HI or as soln. of mineral or tetralkylammonium iodides or bromides, or a mixt. in a carboxylic acid. The prods. are used as solvents. High yields of esters are obtd. of higher homologous alcohols e.g. from lower esters are by prod. to other processes. The process is effected in a single stage.
