Abstract

A stable dispersion of CaCO3 in a non-volatile diluent oil (I), suitable for use as a lubricant additive, is produced by (A) forming a mixt. of (a) 5-30 wt.pts. of an oil-soluble sulphonic acid or Ca sulphonate dispersing agent, (b) 10-50 wt. pts of a volatile hydrocarbon solvent of b,p 150 degrees C, (c) 5-30 wt. pts MeOH, (d) >=0.25 wt. pts of (I) of b.p >200 degrees C, and (e) 1-25 wt. pts of CaO and/or Ca(OH)2 the amt being sufficient to ensure an alkalinity index (in acetic acid medium) of >=50 in the final product, (B) treating the mixt. with 0.75-0.95 mole CO2 per mole of Ca of over alkalinisation, the temp. being =35 degrees C, (C) adding an amt of (I) sufficient to bring the total content of (I) to 20-85 pts. per 100 wt. pts. of combined dispersing agent and (I); (D) heating the mixt to remove the quasi-total of volatile materials, and (E) blowing CO2 into the mixt to convert the quasi-total of CaO or Ca(OH)2 into CaCO3. The process can be operated on a large scale.
