Abstract

The invention relates to the use of an oligo or polysaccharide (degree of polymerization (DP) values greater than 10) constructed from a basic unit comprising hydroxyl groups carrying at least in part substituents having di tri or tetramine functions without permanent charge as antibacterial and antimycotic agents wherein the oligo or polysaccharide constructed from a basic unit can be obtained by derivatisation of the hydroxyl groups of an oligo or polysaccharide to form leaving groups obtaining a derivatised oligo or polysaccharide followed by a reaction of the derivatised oligo or polysaccharide with an amine having at least two amino functions capable of nucleophilic substitution to form an amino substituted oligo or polysaccharide by nucleophilic substitution wherein the hydroxyl groups of the oligo or polysaccharide are substituted at least in part by the amine having at least two amino functions capable of nucleophilic substitution with an average degree of substitution having a value > 0.1 wherein the average degree of substitution is defined as the quotient of the number of amines with at least two amino functions capable of a nucleophilic substitution that are introduced into the oligo or polysaccharide by the substitution divided by the number of original hydroxyl groups of the oligo or polysaccharide multiplied by the number of original hydroxyl groups per oligo and polymer basic unit.
