Abstract

The present invention provides a safety warning system comprising a pressure sensitive sensor for positioning at a dangerous location, for ensuring the safety of a person by transmitting a signal which causes an alarm alert when the presence of the person is detected. A signal is transmitted to a receiving unit which is ideally a portable receiving unit which includes an alarm which is triggered to transmit an alarm signal when the pressure sensor is activated. Ideally, the sensor of the present invention is in the form of a strip of sensor material. Having such warning system for caregivers including parents and guardians is a significant advantage in providing an early warning to a nearby parent or quardian who is unaware that the mobile baby or young child has wandered close to a dangerous area of the house/building. <Figure 1>

Description

SAFETY WARNING SYSTEM COMPRISING A PRESURE SENSITIVE SENSOR P15197.IES The present invention concerns a safety warning system comprising a pressure sensitive sensor. Babies who are mobile and young children are unaware of the dangers of moving near to fireplaces which may have an unguarded lit fire and close to areas around fireplaces including firestones which are usually made of hard stone such as marble and can present an enormous danger to babies and children who may trip, fall and bang their head on the hard stone. Likewise, mobile babies and young children can be entirely unaware of the dangers of going outside through a door which may have been inadvertently left open or ajar; climbing upstairs or approaching stairways from an upper floor.
It is to be understood that although the safety warning system of the present invention is described herein with reference to babies and young children, that the use of the present safety warning system is not limited to this demographic group but is merely described in terms of this age group for demonstration purposes. Of course, the safety warning system of the present invention may also be advantageous for use with any age group or person for whom safety is a concern, e.g. persons with reduced ability to assess safety risks, e.g. persons with dementia or who have Alzheimer’s disease, for instance.
For the sake of clarity, it is to be understood that the term person” will be used to refer to people of all ages including babies and children.
The present invention seeks to alleviate the above disadvantages.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a safety warning system comprising a pressure sensitive sensor for positioning at a dangerous location, for ensuring the safety of a person by transmitting a signal which causes an alarm alert when the presence of the person is detected.
Having a such warning system for caregivers including parents and guardians is a significant advantage in providing an early warning to a nearby parent or guardian who is unaware that the mobile baby or young child has wandered close to a dangerous area of the house/building. ; -2Preferably, the signal is transmitted to a receiving unit which is ideally a portable receiving unit which includes an alarm which is triggered to transmit an alarm signal when the pressure sensor is activated.
Ideally, the sensor of the present invention is in the form of a strip of sensor material.
Alternatively, in another embodiment, the sensor may take the form of a mat sensor laid at a doorway or at the foot of a stairs.
The sensor maybe of a type in which the sensor comprises a flexible intermediate insulation material disposed between two mutually opposed electrode plates, while the outside is covered by an insulated covering. The construction is such that when a person puts weight on the mat sensor, the upper electrode plate is pressed and bent by the body weight pressure so that the mutually opposed electrode plates come into contact, thus closing a circuit, so that an output indicating the presence of the person is produced. This present detection output is used to transmit an output signal to the receiver unit which is then triggered to emit an alarm.
The present invention provides a low-cost, easy and easy to use safety warning system for vulnerable persons.
The safety warning system of the present invention requires no set-up, calibration or tuning which could require a skilled technician.
The safety warning system of the present invention includes sensor that is essentially unaffected by ambient electrical or magnetic fields.
The present invention has the advantage of providing a self-contained monitoring system specifically provided in the form of a strip adapted for use along edges of doorways, fireplaces, eohedges or toddler bed edges. -3The receiver unit provides a monitoring system with both visual and audible alerts to indicate operational status and to provide warning that a person being cared for is approaching a dangerous location.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the sensor strip portion of the inventive safety warnings system of the present invention; Figure 2 is a detailed view of an attachment clip; Figure 3 is a detailed view of an attachment clip attached to keys; and Figure 4 is a perspective view of the sensor strip.
It is to be noted and understood that although Figure 1 and Figure 4 of the drawings show a battery case at one end of the pressure strip, this is not in any way essential.. A battery can of course be incorporated into the pressure strip in a preferred embodiment.
The safety warning system comprising pressure sensitive strip of the present invention can be adhered to a cot, stairways, balconies, in front of fireplaces and such like, where needed.
In one version, there may be light emitting diodes (LED’s) included on the pressure strip.
Referring to the drawings, the safety warning system of the present invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 and comprises a pressure sensitive sensor in the form of sensor strip 20; and a receiver unit which is a mobile receiver unit 30. The pressure sensitive strip 20 includes at one end thereof, a transmitter 21.
The receiver unit 30 comprises a receiver unit cover and a receiver unit base. The receiver unit is adapted to engage with the receiver unit base. The receiver 30 includes arcuate corners 33. -4It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details described herein which are given by way of example only and that various modifications and alterations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended Claims.

Claims (5)

Claims:
1. A safety warning system comprising a pressure sensitive sensor for positioning at a pre-determined location which presents a hazard for a first person and for detecting pressure exerted by the weight of the first person on the sensor; the safety warning system also 5 comprising an alarm and triggering means for triggering the alarm when the pressure sensitive sensor is activated by the first person in contact with the pressure sensitive sensor whereby the safety warning system provides an alarm alert to a second person when the first person comes into contact with the pressure sensitive sensor thereby providing a safety warning to the second person to assist the first person; optionally wherein the pressure 10 sensitive sensor is in the form of a strip of sensor material thereby providing a self-contained monitoring system in the form of a strip adapted for use along edges of doorways, fireplaces, cot edges or toddler bed edges; and/or optionally wherein the sensor is in the form of a mat for locating at a doorway or at the foot of a stairs. 15
2. A safety warning system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the signal is transmitted to a receiving unit which is preferably a portable receiving unit,
3. A safety warning system as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the portable receiving unit includes the alarm which is triggered to transmit the alarm signal when the pressure sensor is 20 activated wherein the safety warning system provides a monitoring system with an audible alerts to provide a warning that a person being cared for is approaching a pre-determined location which presents a hazard for the first person.
4. A safety warning system as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the safety warning system 25 also comprises a visual alert to indicate operational status and to provide a warning that a person being cared for is approaching a pre-determined location which presents a hazard for the first person.
5. A safety warning system substantially as herein described, with reference to and as 30 shown in the accompanying drawings.
