Abstract
A data storage device (100) is provided comprising a processor (102), an input-output port (104) and a data storage element (106), the input-output port being arranged to engage with a communications port of a mobile telecommunications device such that the data storage device and the mobile telecommunications device can transfer data theebetween, the data storage element having data stored thereupon corresponding to graphic content, the processor being arranged to receive a request for data from the mobile telecommunications device and retrieve data corresponding to the graphic content from the data storage element and to pass said data to the movile telecommunications device via the input-output port, the data being arranged to be appended to a message to be transmitted from the mobile telecommunications device.

This invention relates to a mobile a mobile telecommunications advertising module and method. More particularly, but not exclusively, it relates to a mobile telecommunications advertising module and method for remunerating a user of a mobile telecommunications device for advertisements transmitted to a recipient from the mobile telecommunications device.
Companies spend a large amount of resources advertising their products via both traditional media, such as newsprint and television, and the Internet. Whilst, these channels of advertising are effective they are not as effective as consumer led interactive marketing techniques such as viral marketing.
One channel of marketing that has not been addressed generally by the current advertising media is that of mobile telephones.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a data storage device comprising a processor, an input-output port and a data storage element, the input-output port being arranged to engage with a communications port of a mobile telecommunications device such that the data storage and the mobile telecommunications device can transfer data therebetween, the data storage element having data stored thereupon corresponding to graphic content, the processor being arranged to receive a request for data from the mobile telecommunications device and retrieve data corresponding to the graphic content from the data storage element and to pass said data to the mobile telecommunications device via the
ΙΕο 7 ο input-output port, the data being arranged to be appended to a message to be transmitted from the mobile telecommunications device.
The data may comprise a code. The processor may be arranged to parse the message in order to determine if a code corresponding to graphic content is contained therein. The code may be decoded at network infrastructure, such as a basestation. The network infrastructure may be arranged to parse the message in order to determine if a code corresponding to graphic content is contained therein. The network infrastructure may comprise a data structure containing graphic content and the graphic content may be inserted into the message in response to the decoded code.
The use of a code corresponding to graphic content reduces the amount of data that must be transferred from the mobile telephone to the network infrastructure. This reduces network traffic.
The data may comprise a graphic data file. The graphic data file may be inserted into the message at the telecommunications device.
The input output port may be arranged to connect to an external data port of the mobile telecommunications device.
The graphic content may correspond to either a logo or a slogan. The logo or the slogan may be related to an advertiser’s product or brand.
The data storage device may be arranged to transmit data to network infrastructure such that a user’s account is credited each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted.

The data storage device may be arranged to communicate with a SIM card of the mobile telecommunications device each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted such that a user’s account is credited each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a mobile telecommunications device comprising a data storage device according to the first aspect of the present invention.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a telecommunications system comprising: a mobile telecommunications device: network infrastructure;
the mobile telecommunications device being arranged to transfer code data corresponding to graphic content to the network infrastructure appended to a message;
the network infrastructure being arranged to append graphic content defined by said code data to the message and being further arranged to transmit said message and said graphic content to a recipient.
The network infrastructure may be arranged to credit a user account each time graphic content is appended to the message.
The mobile telecommunications device may comprise a SIM card and may be arranged to credit a user account each time graphic content is appended to the message.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method or remunerating a user of a mobile telecommunications device comprising the steps of:

i) providing content at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device;
ii) accessing said content in response to a flag;
iii) appending at least one piece of said content to an outgoing graphic 5 based communication; and iv) crediting a user account associated with the mobile telecommunications device, or a user, in response to the sending of said content to a third party.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of increasing exposure of advertising comprising the steps of:
i) providing content corresponding to a logo or slogan associated with a product at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device;
ii) appending said content to an outgoing graphic based 15 communication; and iii) opening said content at a mobile telecommunications device receiving said graphic based communication.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention there is provided a 20 data structure comprising entries relating to:
alphanumeric code data; graphic content data; value of graphic content data;
receipt ofthe alphanumeric code at a processor causes the graphic 25 content to be appended to a message passing through the processor and further causes a user account to be credited with an amount corresponding to the numerical value of the value of the graphic content data.

The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a data storage device according to an 5 aspect of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a schematic diagram of a telecommunications system according to an aspect of the present invention comprising a mobile telecommunications device according to another aspect of the present invention which comprises a data storage device of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a flow chart detailing a method of remunerating a user of a mobile telecommunications device; and
Figure 4 is a flow chart detailing a method of a method of increasing exposure of advertising.
Referring now to Figure 1, a data storage device 100 for use with a mobile telecommunications device comprises a processor 102, an input-output port 104 and a data storage element 106.
The input-output port 104 engages with a communications port of the mobile telecommunications device to allow the transfer of data the device 100 and the mobile telecommunications device. Additionally, the data storage device 100 may draw power from the mobile telecommunications device.
The data storage element 106 has data stored upon it that corresponds to graphic content, typically an advertising slogan or a logo associated with a brand. The data stored upon the data storage element 106.

The processor 102 receives a request for data from the mobile telecommunications device and retrieves data corresponding to the graphic content from the data storage element 106. The processor 102 passes this data to the mobile telecommunications device via the inputoutput port 104.
The mobile telecommunications device appends the data to a message to be transmitted to a recipient.
In one embodiment the data is a code, typically an alphanumeric code.
The processor 102 parses the message in order to determine if the message contains a code corresponding to graphic content.
In an alternative embodiment, the data comprises a graphic data file. The graphic data file is upoloaded from the data storage device 100 and is inserted into the message at the telecommunications device.
In one embodiment, the data storage device 100 transmits data to network infrastructure, via the telecommunications device, such that a user’s account is credited each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted.
In an alternative embodiment, the data storage device 100 communicates with a SIM card of the mobile telecommunications device each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted, such that a user’s account is credited each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted.
Referring now to Figure 2, a telecommunications system 200 comprises a mobile telecommunications device 202 and network infrastructure 204.

The mobile telecommunications device 202 comprises a handset 206 with a SIM card 207, and a data storage device 208 as described hereinbefore.
Typically, the mobile telecommunications device 200 comprises a mobile telephone, a personal digital assistant or a Blackberry®.
Usually, the network infrastructure 204 comprises a basestation or a satellite.
In use, the mobile telecommunications device 202 transfers code data appended to a message which corresponds to graphic content to the network infrastructure 204, in a manner described hereinbeofore with reference to Figure 1.
The code is decoded at network infrastructure 204. The network infrastructure 204 parses the message in order to determine if a code corresponding to graphic content is contained therein. The network infrastructure 204 stores a data structure 210 containing graphic content and the graphic content is appended into the message in response to the decoded code.
The network infrastructure 204 appends graphic content defined by said code data to the message transmits the message and said graphic content to a recipient.
In one embodiment, the network infrastructure 204 may be arranged to credit a user account held either locally or centrally at a control centre each time graphic content is appended to a message.

In an alternative embodiment, the mobile telecommunications device 202 SIM card 207 credits a user account, typically held at the SIM card, each time graphic content is appended to a message.
Referring not to Figure 3, a method or remunerating a user of a mobile telecommunications device comprises providing content at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device (Step 300). The content is accessed in response to a flag (Step 302). A piece of content is appended to an outgoing graphic based communication (Step 304). A user account associated with the mobile telecommunications device, or a user, is credited in response to the sending of said content to a third party (Step 306).
Referring now to Figure 4, a method of increasing exposure of advertising comprises providing content corresponding to a logo or slogan associated with a product at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device (Step 400). The content is appended to an outgoing graphic based communication (Step 402). The content is opened at a mobile telecommunications device receiving said graphic based communication.
It will be appreciated that a user may select graphic content either by means of a graphical menu or via the use of an alphanumeric code.
It will be further appreciated that references to the “crediting” of a user account are generally used in the context of monetary credits, although the term “credit” may be construed as any type of credit, for example points or other non-monetary value systems.
Alterations and modifications may be made to the above without departing from the scope of the invention.
Claims (6)
1. A data storage device comprising a processor, an input-output port and a data storage element, the input-output port being arranged to 5 engage with a communications port of a mobile telecommunications device such that the data storage and the mobile telecommunications device can transfer data therebetween, the data storage element having data stored thereupon corresponding to graphic content, the processor being arranged to receive a request for data from the mobile 10 telecommunications device and retrieve data corresponding to the graphic content from the data storage element and to pass said data to the mobile telecommunications device via the input-output port, the data being arranged to be appended to a message to be transmitted from the mobile telecommunications device.
2. A data storage device according to claim 1 wherein the graphic content corresponds to either a logo or a slogan.
3. A method or remunerating a user of a mobile telecommunications 20 device comprising the steps of: i) providing content at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device; ii) accessing said content in response to a flag; iii) appending at least one piece of said content to an outgoing graphic 25 based communication; and iv) crediting a user account associated with the mobile telecommunications device, or a user, in response to the sending of said content to a third party. 4. A method of increasing exposure of advertising comprising the steps of: i) providing content corresponding to a logo or slogan associated with a product at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device;
5. Ii) appending said content to an outgoing graphic based communication; and iii) opening said content at a mobile telecommunications device receiving said graphic based communication.
