Abstract

An extruded member 15 has short walls 1, 2 and longer walls 3 and 4 which together form a box-like structure. The short wall 2 is the base of a channel 6, elongate webs 8 and 9 of which lie within a channel 21 running along a bar 20. The elongate webs 8 and 9 are planar webs and the sides 24, 25 of the channel 21 are also planar. A web 10 extends substantially vertically upwardly from the innermost end of the first web 8 and makes an acute angle with that web. The channel 6 is filled with foamed plastics material which expands and hardens to fix the member 15 and bar 20 together. The elongate webs 8 and 9 maybe provided with nibs 32, 33 which engage in channel grooves 34, 35 provided at the ends of the sides 24, 25 adjacent the base 23 of the channel 21.

Description

The Patent Specification GB 2,236,787 A discloses an extruded member the shape of cross-section of which includes first and second opposite short walls and first and second opposite longer walls, which form with the short walls a structure having a generally rectangular hollow within it, and further portions forming opposite sides of a channel the base of which is the second short wall and which has an open mouth remote from and facing away from the first short wall.
GB 2,236,787 A also discloses an assembly comprising an extruded member as defined above and a bar having a channel running along it, with its mouth narrower than its base and the mouth of the channel in the extruded member within the channel in the bar, and expanded foam plastics material within the channel in the extruded member and holding that member to the bar.
The extruded member and the bar disclosed in GB 2,236,787 A are made of aluminium and plastics material, respectively, the plastics material also being extruded. Therefore, the bar can and does have quite a complicated cross-section which would be impossible if the bar were not extruded.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an extruded member which is as defined above but can be used with a bar which has not been made by extrusion. It is another object of the present invention to provide an assembly which is as defined above but in which the bar has not been formed by extrusion.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an extruded member as defined above, characterised in that when the shape of its cross-section is viewed when it is in a particular orientation, with the longer walls horizontal and the short walls vertical and with the channel on the right, the portions forming opposite sides of the channel are seen to include a first elongate web which extends upwardly and to the right away from the base of the channel and a second elongate web which extends downwardly and to the right away from the base of the channel, these webs terminating at the mouth of the channel and bounding the channel over more than the outermost third of the depth of the channel, and there is seen to be a third straight web which extends substantially vertically upwardly from the innermost end of the first web and makes an acute angle with that web.
There may be a further web which extends substantially horizontally and to the right away from the outer end of the third web and/or another portion which provides an abutment face below the innermost end of the second web and slightly inclined to the vertical. Instead, there may be a fourth web which extends substantially vertically downwardly from the innermost end of the second web and makes an acute angle with that web. 930287½ According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided an assembly as defined above, characterised in that the extruded member is a member according to the first aspect of the present invention and the channel in the bar has opposite sides which are planar and substantially parallel to and engaged by the first and second webs, respectively.
Preferably, the bar is made of wood.
Six extruded members, each with a bar assembled with it, are described below and shown in the accompanying drawings to exemplify the present invention. In these drawings : Fig. 1 shows the cross-sections of a first extruded member and of a first bar which together form a mullion or a transom of a casement window, and Fig. 2 shows the cross-sections of second and third extruded members and of second and third bars which together form a frame and sash of a window, and Fig. 3 shows the cross-sections of a fourth extruded member and of a fourth bar which together form a mullion or a transom of a casement window, and Fig. 4 shows the cross-sections of fifth and sixth extruded members and of fifth and sixth bars which together form a frame and sash of a window.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, each of the three extruded members 15, made of aluminium, has a shape of cross-section which includes first and second opposite short walls 1 and 2 and first and second fc830287 opposite longer walls 3 and 4 which form with the short walls 1 and 2 a structure having a generally rectangular hollow 5 within it. In each case there are further portions which form opposite sides of a channel 6 the base of which is the second short wall 2 and which has an open mouth 7 which is remote from, and faces away from, the first short wall 1. In each case when the cross-section of the extruded member is viewed when the cross-section is in a particular orientation (as illustrated), with the longer walls 3 and 4 horizontal and the short walls 1 and 2 vertical and with the channel 6 on the right, the portions forming the channel 6 are seen to include a first straight and elongate web 8, which extends upwardly and to the right from the base 2 of the channel 6, and a second straight and elongate web 9, which extends downwardly and to the right away from the base 2 of the channel. The webs 8 and 9 terminate in the same vertical plane at the mouth of the channel 6 in each case and the webs bound the channel over more than the outermost third, and indeed over more than the outermost half, of the depth of the channel, in contrast to the extruded members illustrated in GB 2,236,787 A, where, over more than two-thirds of the depth of the channel, the channel is bounded at opposite sides by two parallel and horizontal surfaces. In addition, in each case shown in Figures 1 and 2, there is a third straight web 10, extending substantially vertically upwardly from the innermost end of the first web 8 and making an acute angle with that web, and there are connecting pieces 17 and 18 joining the webs 6 and 10 to the base 2 and joining the web 9 to the base 2, these pieces 17 and 18 bounding the channel near its base 2.
In the example shown in the upper half of Figure 2, there is also a further web 12, which extends substantially horizontally and to the right away from the outer end of the third web 10, and another portion 13 which provides an ,.93028 7 abutment face below the innermost end of the second web 9, this abutment face being on the right-hand side of the portion 13 and being slightly inclined (from right to left, proceeding downwardly) to the vertical.
In the examples shown in Figure 1 and in the lower half of Figure 2, there is a fourth web 11 which extends substantially vertically downwardly from the innermost end of the second web 9 and makes an acute angle with that web. The webs 10 and 11 are co-planar.
The parts of the cross-sections to the left of the channels 6 are rather similar to the corresponding parts of the cross-sections of some of the extruded members illustrated in GB 2,236,787 A and need not be described in detail here.
Each of the three bars 20, made of wood, shown in Figures 1 and 2 has a channel 21 running along it, with its mouth 22 narrower than its base 23. The channel has opposite sides 24 and 25 which are planar and substantially parallel to and engaged by the first and second webs 8 and 9, respectively, when the extruded member 15 and the bar 20 are assembled together with the mouth 7 of the channel 6 in the member 15 within the channel 21 in the bar 20. Foamed plastics material (not shown) is placed in the channel 6 and when it expands and hardens it holds the member 15 and bar 20 fixed in relation to one another.
In the bar 20 shown in Figure 1 there are vertical surfaces 26 and 27 which are co-planar and abutted by the webs 10 and 11, respectively, on opposite sides of the channel 6, further channels 28 and 29 and inclined surfaces 30 and 31, all on the left-hand side. .93028 7 In the example shown in the upper half of Figure 2, the features 26, 28 and 30 are present as before and the web 12 extends into the channel 28. The features 27 and 29 are absent and on one side of the channel 21 in the bar 20 there is an inclined face 31 which is parallel to and abutted by the right-hand surface of the portion 13 of the member 15, whilst the surface 26 is abutted by the web 10.
In the embodiment shown in the lower half of Figure 2 the features 28 and 30 are present as before but the features 29 and 31 are not; the webs 10 and 11 of the member 15 again abut vertical surfaces 26 and 27 on the bar 20.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawings both the member 15 and the bar 20 incorporate complementary modifications to enhance the assemblies of member 15 and bar 20. The member 15 is modified by the provision of nibs 32 and 33 at the ends of the webs 8 and 9 remote from the short wall 2. The nibs 32 and 33 are formed extending substantially vertically upward and substantially downward respectively from the web 8 and from the web 9 respectively .
The opposite sides 24 and 25 of the channel 21 of the bar 20 are terminated at the base 23 in channel grooves 34 and 35 respectively. In the same manner that the opposite sides 24 and 25 are planar and substantially parallel to and engaged by the first and second webs 8 and 9 respectively so that the channel grooves 34 and 35 locate and accommodate in a slide fit the nibs 32 and 33 respectively of the webs 8 and 9 respectively.
In all other respects the extruded member and the assembly of an extruded member and a bar as illustrated in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings have the same parts as the extruded member and the assembly of an extruded member and a bar as illustrated in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2 respectively of the accompanying drawings. Accordingly the same reference numbers have been used to indicate the same parts in all Figs, of the accompanying drawings.
The assemblies of member 15 and bar 20 may be used in window frames as will be understood from GB 2,236,787 A and may also be used in glazed door frames, in all cases the bar 20 preferably being on the inside of the building.

Claims (10)

CLAIMS:
1. An extruded member (15) the shape of cross-section of which includes first and second opposite short walls (1, 2) and first and second opposite longer walls (3, 4), which form with the short walls (1, 2) a structure having a generally rectangular hollow (5) within it, and further portions forming opposite sides of a channel (6) the base of which is the second short wall (2) and which has an open mouth (7) remote from and facing away from the first short wall (1), characterised in that when the shape of cross-section of the extruded member (15) is viewed when it is in a particular orientation, with the longer walls (3, 4) horizontal and the short walls (1, 2) vertical and with the channel (6) on the right, the portions forming opposite sides of the channel (6) are seen to include a first elongate web (8) which extends upwardly and to the right away from the base (2) of the channel (6) and a second elongate web (9) which extends downwardly and to the right away from the base (2) of the channel (6), these webs (8, 9) terminating at the mouth (7) of the channel and bounding the channel over more than the outermost third of the depth of the channel, and there is seen to be a third straight web (10) which extends substantially vertically upwardly from the innermost end of the first web (8) and makes an acute angle with that web (8).
2. A member according to Claim 1, characterised in that the first elongate web (8) and the second elongate web (9) are provided at the end thereof remote from the base (2) with a first nib (32) and a second nib (33) respectively.
3. A member according to claim 1 or 2, characterised by a further web (12) which extends substantially horizontally and to the right away from the outer end of the third web (10) . *93028 7
4. A member according to claim 1, 2 or 3, characterised by another portion (13) which provides an abutment face below the innermost end of the second web (9) and slightly inclined to the vertical.
5. A member according to claim 1, characterised by a fourth web (11) which extends substantially vertically downwardly from the innermost end of the second web (9) and makes an acute angle with that web (9).
6. An extruded member substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1, or the upper part of Figure 2 or the lower part of Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings .
7. An assembly comprising an extruded member (15) the shape of cross-section of which includes first and second opposite short walls (1, 2) and first and second opposite longer walls (3, 4) which form with the short walls (1, 2) a structure having a generally rectangular hollow (5) within it, and further portions forming opposite sides of a channel (6) the base of which is the second short wall (2) and which has an open mouth (7) remote from and facing away from the first short wall (1), the assembly further comprising a bar (20) having a channel (21) running along it, with its mouth (22) narrower than its base (23) and the mouth (7) of the channel (6) in the extruded member (15) being within the channel (21) in the bar, and expanded foam plastics material within the channel (6) in the extruded member (15) and holding that member to the bar (20), characterised in that the extruded member (15) is in accordance with any preceding claim and the channel (21) in the bar (20) has opposite sides (24, 25) which are planar and substantially parallel to and engaged by the first and second webs (8, 9) respectively . 1 ο 930287a

An assembly according to Claim 6, characterised in that the first and second webs (8, 9) are provided with first and second nibs (32, 33) and the channel (21) in the bar (20) has opposite sides (24, 25) which terminate at the 5 base (23) of channel (21) in channel grooves (34, 35), the nibs (32, 33) engaging in the channel grooves (34, 35).
9. An assembly of an extruded member and a bar substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to 10. Figure 1, or the upper part of Figure 2 or the lower part of Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
10. A window frame including an extruded member or an assembly according to any preceding claim.
