Abstract

A pipeline storage reel assembly for a slurry distribution apparatus comprising a reel upon which a flexible pipeline may be wound, the reel being mounted on a support frame for rotation about an axis of rotation, the support frame being adapted to be mounted on a vehicle, such as a tractor, via a coupling frame pivotally coupled to the support frame about a substantially vertical pivot axis, whereby the support frame can be pivoted with respect to the coupling frame to adjust the orientation of the reel with respect to the coupling frame and thereby, in use, with respect to the vehicle upon which the assembly is mounted.

Description

A Slurry Distribution Apparatus having a Pipeline Storage Reel Assembly FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a slurry distribution apparatus and in particular to a slurry distribution apparatus having a pipeline storage reel assembly for lay—flat hose.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is desirable to apply slurry to soil to improve the nitrogen content of the soil.
Traditionally, slurry is spread on the land from pressurised slurry tankers towed by a tractor across the land and having a rear spray outlet from which the slurry is passed onto a splash plate whereby the slurry is crudely sprayed onto the land or, more preferably, delivered directly onto or into the soil via a plurality of trailing shoe slurry outlets, a band spreader or injection devices suspended from a boom and connected to a slurry tanker via individual delivery pipes.
However, spreading slurry from pressurised tankers towed behind a tractor leads to problems of soil compaction due to the weight of the tanks and the carriage of mud onto field access roads as the tanker is moved between fields.
A solution to these problems is the use of an umbilical system for slurry handling, where slurry is pumped from a stationary tanker or more preferably from a storage facility (lagoon or tank) using a high-pressure pump, via a flexible pipeline, to a tractor mounted applicator unit. Once the system is set up by laying a pipeline across a field, the pump is started and the tractor mounted applicator unit is then driven in straight lines up and down the field, dragging the supply pipeline up and down the spreading field.
The flexible pipeline is typically made up of multiple lengths of lay—flat hose (usually m per length) connected end to end, to provide a total pipeline length of typically m. Various combinations of pipeline diameters are 4" and 5" are most common used. A tractor mounted pipeline reeler unit is typically used to deploy and retrieve the flexible pipeline, comprising a powered reel upon which the pipeline is wound.
Reels are available to carry various multiples of 200m or 300m, with total capacities ranging from 200m to 2400m per machine, and are either tractor 3—point link mounted or trailed.
A problem with known pipeline reeler units used for this purpose is that the pipeline is not wound evenly on the reel as the reel is rotated recovering of the pipeline, leading to damage to the pipeline. This is a particular problem when using lay-flat hose, which can become twisted and thereby damaged as it is wound onto the reel.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a slurry distribution apparatus comprising an applicator means for applying slurry to the ground, a slurry reservoir, a flexible pipeline for delivering slurry from said slurry reservoir to said applicator means and a pipeline storage reel assembly comprising a reel upon which the flexible pipeline may be wound, the apparatus further comprising a vehicle upon which the pipeline storage reel assembly is mounted whereby the flexible pipeline can be laid across a field and/or recovered, the reel of the pipeline storage reel assembly being mounted on a support frame for rotation about an axis of rotation, the support frame being mounted on the vehicle via a coupling frame pivotally coupled to the support frame about a substantially vertical pivot axis, whereby the orientation of the reel with respect to the direction of travel of the vehicle can be adjusted by pivoting the support frame with respect to the coupling frame about said pivot axis, drive means being provided for driving the reel about said axis of rotation in a first direction to wind the pipeline onto the reel and in a second direction, opposite said first direction, to unwind the hose from the reel, actuating means being provided for adjusting the orientation of the support frame with respect to the coupling frame and a controller being provided for controlling the actuating means such that the support frame is reciprocally pivoted with respect to the coupling frame such that the pipeline can be evenly wound onto the reel by the drive means during recovery of the pipeline, the controller being adapted to adjust the speed at which the support frame is pivoted with respect to the coupling frame, wherein the controller is programmed to intermittently pivot the coupling frame with respect to the support frame between its limits of pivotal motion.
The actuating means may comprise at least one double acting ram acting between the support frame and coupling frame such that extension and retracting of the ram pivots the support frame with respect to the coupling frame about said pivot axis.
The support frame may comprise a main portion extending substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the reel and side members extending from either end of the main frame portion perpendicular to the main frame, between which side member the reel supported, the coupling frame being pivotally coupled to a central region of the main portion of the support frame.
In one embodiment the support frame may be adapted to be pivoted with respect to coupling frame about said pivot axis through an angle of approximately 30°, preferably approximately 15° to either side of a central position wherein the rotational axis of the reel is perpendicular to the normal direction of travel of the vehicle.
A drive means is provided for driving the reel about said axis of rotation in a first direction to wind the pipeline onto the reel. The drive means can also drive the reel in a second direction, opposite said first direction, to unwind the hose from the reel.
The drive means may comprise at least one motor, for example a hydraulic motor.
A controller is provided for controlling the actuating means such that the support frame is reciprocally pivoted with respect to the coupling frame such that the pipeline can be evenly wound onto the reel by the drive means during recovery of the pipeline. The controller is adapted to facilitate adjustment of the speed at which the support frame is pivoted with respect to the coupling frame. The controller is programmed to intermittently pivot the coupling frame with respect to the support frame between its limits of pivotal motion. This pivotal motion of the support frame, and the reel mounted thereon, as the reel is driven to wind the pipeline onto the reel may ensure that the pipelines is evenly wound onto the reel and, where the pipeline is formed from one or more length of lay—flat hose, ensures that the hose lies flat on the reel.
The flexible pipeline may be from one or more lengths of lay-flat hose.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A vehicle mounted pipeline storage reel assembly for a slurry distribution apparatus in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :— Figure 1 is a plan view of a vehicle mounted pipeline storage reel assembly for a slurry distribution apparatus in accordance with an embodiment of the present invenflon; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the assembly of Figure 1 with the coupling frame omitted; Figure 3 is a side view of the assembly of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a front view of the assembly of Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A vehicle mounted pipeline storage reel assembly for a slurry distribution apparatus in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a reel 2 upon which a flexible slurry pipeline (not shown), preferably comprises one or more lengths of lay-flat hose, may be wound. The reel is journaled to a support frame 4 incorporating a hydraulic drive unit 6 adapted to rotate the reel 2 with respect to the support frame 4 about an axis of rotation. By driving the reel 2 in one of two opposite directions via the drive unit 6 it is possible to wind the pipeline onto the reel or to unwind the hose from the reel respectively.
Preferably the hydraulic drive unit 6 is coupled to a source of hydraulic fluid provided on the vehicle upon which the assembly is mounted, preferably via suitable hydraulic hoses and couplings. A separate drive unit may be provided at each end of the reel 2.
The support frame 4 includes a main portion 8 extending substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the reel 2 and formed from parallel spaced apart frame members having transversely extending struts extending therebetween. Support frame side members 10,12 extend from either end of the main frame portion 8, between which the reel 4 is supported on suitable journals at outer ends of each side member ,12.
The support frame 4 is adapted to be mounted on a vehicle, such as a tractor, via a coupling frame 20, the coupling frame 20 being pivotally coupled to a central region of the main portion 8 of the support frame 4 about a substantially vertical pivot axis.
The coupling frame 20 may be mounted on the front or the rear of the vehicle and may incorporate mounting features to allow it to be coupled to a three point linkage and or A-frame.
Actuating means, such as a pair of double acting hydraulic rams 22,24, are provided for pivoting the support frame 4 with respect to the coupling frame 20 about said substantially vertical pivot axis, whereby, when the coupling frame 20 is mounted on a vehicle, the support frame 4 can be pivoted about said pivot axis with respect to the direction of travel of the vehicle. Alternative actuating means acting between the support frame 4 and coupling frame 20 are envisaged.
In the embodiment described and as illustrated in Figure1, the support frame 4 may be adapted to be pivoted with respect to coupling frame 8 through an angle of approximately 30° such that the support frame 4 and the reel 2 mounted thereon can be swung with respect to the vehicle through 15° to either side of a longitudinal axis/normal direction of travel of the vehicle. This allows the rotational axis of the reel 2 to be reciprocally pivoted with respect to the direction of travel of the vehicle as the pipeline is wound onto the reel 2 during recovery of the pipeline, ensuring that the pipeline is evenly wound onto the reel 2 and thereby avoiding damage to the pipeline, particularly where the pipeline comprises lay—flat hose.
It is envisaged that support frame 4 may be adapted to be pivoted with respect to coupling frame 8 through a greater or lesser angle. Preferably the actuating means adapted to pivot the support frame 4 with respect to the coupling frame 20 is adapted to be controllable by the operator of the vehicle upon which the assembly is mounted. The actuating means may be operated by a controller programmed to automatically wing the reel 2 from side to side about said pivot axis as the pipeline is wound onto the reel, ensuring that the pipeline is evenly wound onto the reel.
The actuating means may be powered from the vehicle, for example from a hydraulic control system of the vehicle, via suitable couplings. The controller may be programmed to permit the operator to adjust the speed at which the reel is swung from side to side. The controller may be programmed to operate the actuating means intermittently, such that the support frame 4 is intermittently swung from side to side with respect to the coupling frame 20 after being retained at one of its limits of pivotal travel for a predetermined period of time. Such motion may facilitate even winding of the pipeline onto the reel. The controller may be adapted to allow the operator to vary the periods of time at which the support frame, and thus the reel, is retained at one of its limits of pivotal travel and/or to vary the speed at which the support frame moves between said limits of pivotal travel.
While the invention has been described in relation to a pipeline storage reel assembly for a slurry distribution apparatus, it is envisaged that a pipeline storage reel assembly in accordance with the present invention may be used for handling pipelines in many other applications, particularly where lay-flat hose is used, such as for handing irrigation pipelines or fire hose.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
