Description

The invention relates to a cleaning appliance mounting a rotary brush and has particular but not exclusive application to carpet sweepers.
According to the invention there is provided a 5 cleaning appliance mounting a rotary brush, the rotary . brush having a brush body mounting driving bristles which in use engage a floor to be cleaned and serve to rotate the brush and working bristles which engage the floor with a sweeping action, in which the tips of the driving bristles Of the brush body are disposed in a ring, the tips of the working bristles of the brush body are disposed.in a further ring concentric with and of I * · greater diameter than said ring and the brush body is mounted in the cleaning appliance with its axis of rotat15 ion inclined so'that only a portion of the periphery of said ring of tips of driving bristles and of said further ring of tips of working bristles bear against the floor to be cleaned, said portions being disposed laterally outyardly of the remainder of the cleaning appliance with the direction of movement of the reoiprocatingly movable cleaning appliance extending substantially tangentially to said portions which bear against the floor.
When the rotary brush is used for sweeping, there is one definite direction of sweeping since the inclined - 3 positioning of the axis of rotation of the brush body causes the ring of driving bristles to roll along the surface of the floor which is to be cleaned and thus causes the rotary brush to rotate. Since the ring in which the tips of the driving bristles are disposed is of a smaller diameter than the ring in which the tips of the working bristles are disposed, the working bristles do not merely roll along the floor which is to be cleaned but perform a sweeping movement with respect thereto.
The driving bristles may thus be shorter than the working bristles. The same effect can be achieved by making the driving bristles stiffer than the working bristles.
The driving bristles can furthermore, in said portion of the periphery of the ring of tips of the driving bristles, be disposed at a greater angle of inclination to the floor which is to be cleaned than the working bristles in said portion of the periphery of said further ring of tips of working bristles. As a result, particularly when the appliance is being used on a surface with a pile such as a carpet or rug the driving bristles penetrate into the pile and ensure rotation of the rotary brush. In this respect, the driving bristles can be disposed more or less at right-angles to the floor which is to be cleaned, in said portion of the periphery of said ring of tips of the driving bristles.
The driving bristles can be disposed in the brush body in a series of bundles of bristles, each bundle being disposed between two bundles of bristles of the working bristles.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a first embodiment of a rotary brush of a cleaning appliance mounting a rotary brush according to the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of a second embodiment of a rotary brush of a cleaning 1 appliance mounting a rotary brush according to the invention; and I Figure 3 shows the rotary brush of Figure 2 viewed from above.
Referring to the drawings, a cleaning appliance particularly a sweeper for sweeping floors' or carpets mounts a rotary brush 10 and includes also a roller brush, the intended purpose of the rotary brush being to feed dirt to the roller brush from areas laterally disposed with respect to the roller brush and thus not swept by the roller brush directly. The rotary brush 10 has a brush body 11 rotatable about a spindle 13. The spindle 13 of the brush body 11 is mounted for rotation in a bearing of a sweeper which is not shown.
The underside 14 of the brush body 11 carries bristles 15, 16 with the tips 17 of the bristles 15 disposed., in $ ring and the tips 18 of the bristles 16 disposed in a further ring and with the two rings con25 centrically encircling the axis of rotation. The bristles 16 serve as working bristles while the bristles 15 serve as driving bristles. The ring of the tips 17 of the driving bristles 15 is disposed within the ring of the tips 18 of the working bristles 16.
The brush body 11 carrying the driving bristles and the· working bristles 16 is disposed so that its axis of rotation is inclined, the tips 17 of the driving bristles and the tips 18 of the working bristles each bearing against the floor which is to be cleaned at , - 5 only a portion of its periphery, said portions being disposed laterally outwardly of the remainder of the sweeper with the direction of movement of the reciprocatingly movable sweeper extending substantially tangentially with respect to the portion which bears against the floor which is to be cleaned. As a result, the ring of tips 17 of the driving bristles roll along the floor which is to be cleaned whereas in each phase of movement, the tips 18 of the working bristles 16 brush actively over the surface which is to be cleaned.
In the embodiment of Figure 1, the driving bristles 15 are shorter than the working bristles 16. The driving bristles 15 do not therefore bend over as easily as the working bristles 16, and the short driving bristles 15 reliably ensure rotation of the rotary brush.
The working bristles 16 are, in said portion of the periphery, less inclined to the floor which is to be cleaned than are the driving bristles 15 in said portion. As a result, the driving bristles 15 can penetrate more satisfactorily into the pile of carpets or rugs. To this end, the driving bristles 15 in said portion of the periphery can extend substantially at right-angles to the floor which is to be cleaned.
In a brush 10a Of Figures 2 and 3, having a brush body 11a mounted on a spindle 13a and having an underside 14a, driving bristles 15a having their tips 17a in a ring are stiffer in construction than working bristles 16a having their tips 18a in a ring. As a result, the driving bristles are less easily bent over than the working bristles and rotation of the rotary brush is reliably achieved.
The driving bristles 15a may be disposed in the brush body in a series of bundles of bristles, each bundle being disposed between two bundles of bristles of the working bristles 16a. <1* The rotary brush is not restricted to use for dirt sweeping but with minor modifications, could be used as a brush for applying cleansing foam.
