Abstract
The preparation of chroman aldehydes of the formula <IMAGE> in which R represents hydroxyl, an ether group which can be converted to hydroxyl by hydrolysis or hydrogenolysis or an ester group which can be converted to hydroxyl by hydrolysis, is described. These compounds are useful intermediates for the preparation of natural optically active alpha -tocopherol and its isomers.
