Abstract
1358536 Laminated materials DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 21 May 1971 [21 May 1970] 24694/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions F2 and D1] A hose-pipe comprises a reinforced body including polymeric material and an applied surface layer of non-woven filamentary strip material impregnated with polymeric material. The non-woven material may be formed from randomly orientated filaments bonded by solvent welding or by the application of heat and pressure, and is preferably between 0À003 and 0À010 of an inch thick. The polymeric material with which the non-woven filaments are impregnated may be rubber latex and may be applied by spreading, dipping, spraying or from a roller. Suitable material is formed from filaments of nylon, polyesters, polypropylene, rayon, or other polymeric or synthetic materials or may be of spun yarn, metal wire or glass fibre or impregnated paper. In one form (Fig. 3) the non-woven fibre is contained in one surface of a strip and is backed by a polymeric layer, and in a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) one edge of the strip comprises only the polymeric backing so that the edges may be overlapped. As shown a hose (Fig. 1) is formed by helically winding a strip of polymer impregnated non- woven material 11 on to a mandrel 12. Reinforcing plies 15, 16 are added and the outer layer 18 is of impregnated non-woven strip. The mandrel is removed after vulcanization. The non-woven fabric may be wound with or without overlap to produce single or multilayers. Alternatively the fabric may be laid in longitudinal strips which may be overlapped. The reinforcement strips 15, 16 may be formed by bonding a porous layer of non-woven filamentary material with a layer of parallel longitudinally extending nylon filaments by impregnating both layers with rubber latex (Fig. 2, not shown). Alternatively any of the reinforcing strips described in Specification 1,356,791 or wrapped, braided or helically wound plies of woven, knitted or other material may be used for the reinforcement.
