Abstract

1367243 Hydrodesulphurization catalysts UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 10 Jan 1972 [11 Jan 1971] 1008/72 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] A method for preparing a catalyst comprises compositing a carrier material with the precursor of at least one catalytically active metallic component selected from each of Groups V1B (i.e. the chromium group) and VIII of the Periodic Table of Elements, said precursor being in the form of one. or more thermally decomposable compounds containing one or more of said selected metals, subjecting the resulting composite, if desired after drying, to a first calcination for at least 0.5 hour in an oxidizing atmosphere containing more than 20% by volume of steam at temperature in the range from 260‹ to 371‹C, and thereafter subjecting the composite to a second calcination for a period of from 1 to 4 hours in a "substantially dry" oxidizing atmosphere and at a temperature in the range from 427‹ to 649‹C. "Substantially dry" is defined as containing not more than 10% by volume of steam. The carrier may be impregnated with solutions of the compounds or mixed with them in the dry state and extruded into particle form. In example I, alumina is impregnated with a solution of ammonium molybdate and cobalt nitrate in ammonium hydroxide, dried, heated in air containing 50% steam for one hour at 650‹F and in air containing 10%, steam for 2 hours at 1100‹F. In example IV alumina is mixed with molybdic anhydride and cobalt carbonate, and the mixture further mixed with 5% nitric acid and extruded, then heated in two stages as before. In comparative example III, catalysts are prepared as in example I but heated either (a) in "substantially dry" air or (b) in air containing about 20% of steam. [GB1367243A]
