Abstract

1,249,079. Epoxidation catalysts. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 1 April, 1970 [2 April, 1969], No. 15373/70. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] Catalysts used in the epoxidation of olefinic compounds with organic hydroperoxides comprise titanium in chemical combination with a solid silica and/or an inorganic silicate. In addition the catalyst may contain a promoter e.g. a compound of magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium and also an oxide or hydroxide of boron, tin, miobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, rhenium, uranium, bismuth or rare earth metals (atomic numbers 57-71). Preferably the catalyst has a specific surface area of at least 1m<SP>2</SP>/g. In the examples catalysts are used comprising in addition to the titanium compound the following:-(a) zirconium, (b) niobium, (c) boron, (d) tin, (e) "didymium" (a complex mixture of rare earth metals), (f) molybdenum, (g) molybdenum and didymium and (h) alumina alone or with magnesium or calcium. For comparative purposes examples are given of the use of other catalysts e.g. mixtures of titania and silica or silicates, various other metals are silica and various metal compounds without silica.
