Abstract

1,261,916. Moulding plastic material. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. 26 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15165/68. Heading B5A. In a method of forming an article on a sup - porting member provided with a flexible boundary wall, the wall is shaped to the desired configuration and made firm, whilst the article is formed, by the juxtaposition of a material which is rendered solid, and in order to separate the formed article from the member the material is rendered fluid. The material may comprise a low melting point metal or metal alloy, a thermoplastic resin or a wax. Alternatively it may be a fluid and solid particle mixture; the particles may be magnetizable and subjected to a magnetic field whereby the material becomes substantially solid. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for forming a tyre, and includes dies 34, 34 brought together to shape an annular core comprised by a flexible rubber diaphragm held between a fixed cap 6 on a pillar 3 and a cap 5 slidable on the pillar. A green tyre carcass 22, or a worn tyre which has been buffed, is placed around the diaphragm and the diaphragm interior is supplied with molten bismuth metal alloy via a piston and cylinder (12, 15), Fig. 2, not shown, and pipe 18, and the alloy is solidified by the feeding of cooling fluid by a pipe 21 into the pillar interior. The dies 34, 34 are replaced by dies 2, 2 providing a chamber 23 into which a curable elastomeric substance is injected through ports 4 to form the tyre tread and sidewalls One or more reinforcing layers may be positioned around the carcass before the injection. After the tyre has set, the alloy is melted by feeding heating fluid through the pipe 21. In a modification, Fig. 6, not shown, the core is formed by two coaxial flexible diaphragms (24, 25) encircling a solid filler (3) supplied with molten metal alloy through a port (29); heating and cooling fluid is supplied through ports (31). In a second modification, Fig. 8, not shown, a flexible hose (32) is contained within the diaphragm interior and encircles and connects with the pillar so that heating or cooling fluid may flow therethrough.
