Abstract
1,263,495. Al alloy wire. SOUTHWIRE CO. May 15, 1969 [May 21, 1968], No. 24839/69. Heading C7A. Annealed aluminium alloy wire with a diameter of 0À375 to 0À0031 inches and an electrical conducitivity of at least 61% I.A.C.S. contains substantially evenly distributed FeAl 3 inclusions, with a particle size of less than 2, 000, formed by the addition of 0À45 to 0À95% Fe to an alloy mass consisting of 98À95 to 99À46% Al, up to 0À15% Si and trace quantities of impurities. The wire may be made by continuously casting the alloy to form a bar, hot rolling the bar substantially immediately after withdrawal from the mould while still at hot working temperature, drawing the rod to wire without intermediate anneals and then at least partially annealing the wire. The alloy may contain up to 0À05% each of B, Cu, Mg, Mn, Ti, V and Zn up to 0À15% in total. The wires may be coated with an insulating material (e.g. polyvinyl chloride, neoprene or polyethylene) and the insulated wires may be stranded together to form a cable which is provided with an exterior waterproof coating. The wires or cables may be used for telephones or magnets.
