Description
“Pressurised Air Generating System” Introduction This invention relates to a pressurised air generating system.
This invention relates to pressurised air generating systems, in particular for use in locations remote from a mains electric power supply. Such systems are used for example for driving pneumatic tools and abrasive blasting machinery. It is well known to provide a stand-alone air compressor assembly driven by a diesel engine for example, all mounted on a trailer for transport to a work site. However, such units are relatively expensive to manufacture. Also, towing such a unit behind a tractor vehicle means that other equipment cannot be towed at the same time, meaning multiple trips or multiple vehicles are required to deliver all the required machinery to a work site.
The present invention is directed towards overcoming this problem.
Summary of the Invention According to the invention there is provided a pressurised air generating system, including: a chassis; an air compressor mounted on the chassis; a drive shaft drivably connected to the air compressor; the drive shaft having a drive input for connection to a power take-off on a tractor vehicle; and a mounting assembly for mounting the chassis on the tractor vehicle.
In one embodiment of the invention the drive shaft has a drive input at each end of the drive shaft.
In another embodiment of the invention the mounting assembly is detachably engagable with the chassis.
In another embodiment of the invention the mounting assembly is detachably engagable with a front of the chassis or with a rear of the chassis to position a drive input of the drive shaft for engagement with either a rear mounted power take—off, or a front mounted power take-off on the tractor vehicle.
In another embodiment of the invention the drive shaft projects outwardly at a front and a rear of the chassis, a drive shaft cover being provided to shroud an input end of the drive shaft at an opposite end of the chassis to the mounting assembly in use.
In another embodiment of the invention the air compressor is pneumatically controlled.
In another embodiment of the invention the mounting assembly is engagable with a three—point linkage on the tractor vehicle.
In another embodiment of the invention the mounting assembly comprises an A-frame having a set of three mounting brackets on an outer face of the A-frame for connection to a three-point linkage on the tractor vehicle, the A-frame having an inner face on which is mounted an upper hitch element and a lower hitch element for demountable engagement with complementary upper and lower hitch elements on the chassis to mount the A-frame on the chassis.
In another embodiment of the invention the upper hitch element on the A-frame comprises an upwardly open hook with an associated pivoting locking arm, the hook engagable with a complementary mounting rail on the chassis, the locking arm being operable to lock the hook in engagement with the mounting rail.
In another embodiment of the invention the lower hitch element comprises a pair of spaced-apart mounting pins on the A-frame, each mounting pin being engagable with a complementary downwardly open mounting hook on the chassis. _Brief Description of the Drawing_s_ The invention will be more clearly understood by the following description of some embodiments thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pressurised air generating system according to the invention; Fig. 2 is another perspective view of the pressurised air generating system, shown in another position of use; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevational view of portion of the pressurised air generating system, showing a mounting assembly of the pressurised air generating system; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view showing portion of the mounting assembly; Fig. 5 is another perspective view of the pressurised air generating system shown with mounting assemblies mounted at opposite ends thereof; Fig. 6 is another perspective view of the arrangement shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a detail, partially exploded, perspective view showing an air compressor assembly forming portion of the system; Fig. 8 is an elevational view of the air compressor assembly; Fig. 9 is an end elevational view of the air compressor assembly; Fig. 10 is another end elevational view of the air compressor assembly; Fig. 11 is a schematic illustration of the air compressor assembly; Fig. 12 is a perspective view of a pressurised air generating system according to a second embodiment of the invention; Fig. 13 is a partially exploded perspective view of the pressurised air generating system shown in Fig. 12; Fig. 14 is another perspective view of the pressurised air generating system shown in Fig. 12; Fig. 15 is a detail, partially exploded, perspective view showing an air compressor assembly forming portion of the pressurised air generating system of Fig 12; and Fig. 16 is another perspective view of the air compressor assembly. petailedf Description of the Preferred §mbod_iments Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 to 11 thereof, there is illustrated a pressurised air generating system according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The system 1 comprises a chassis 2. An air compressor assembly 3 is mounted on the chassis 2. A drive shaft 4 is drivably connected to the air compressor assembly 3. The drive shaft 4 has a drive input 5 for connection to a power take-off on a tractor vehicle. An associated mounting assembly 7 attaches to the chassis 2 for mounting the chassis 2 on the three-point linkage of the tractor vehicle with the drive input 5 positioned for connection to the power take-off (PTO) of the tractor vehicle.
As best seen in Fig. 8, the drive shaft 4 has a drive input 5 at each end of the drive shaft 4. Each drive input 5 projects outwardly at a front end 9 and at a rear end 10 of the chassis 2 for connection to a PTO shaft on the tractor vehicle for mounting the system 1 either at a rear of the tractor vehicle, or at a front of the tractor vehicle. A drive shaft cover 8 is provided to shroud a drive input 5 of the drive shaft 4 at an opposite end of the chassis 2 to the mounting assembly 7 in use as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2.
The mounting assembly 7 is detachably engagable with either the front end 9 or the rear end 10 of the chassis 2 to position one of the drive inputs 5 of the drive shaft 4 for engagement with either a rear mounted PTO, or a front mounted PTO on the tractor vehicle.
The mounting assembly 7 comprises an A—frame 12 with a pair of downwardly diverging arms 14, 15. Three mounting brackets 16, 17, 18 are mounted on an outer face 19 of the A-frame for connection to a three-point linkage on a tractor vehicle in the usual way.
The A—frame 12 has an inner face 20 on which is mounted an upper hitch element 21 and a pair of spaced-apart lower hitch elements 22 for demountable engagement with complementary upper hitch element 23 and lower hitch elements 24 on the chassis 2.
These upper hitch elements 23 and lower hitch elements 24 are provided at both the front end 9 and the rear end 10 of the chassis 2. Thus, the A-frame 12 can be mounted at either the front end 9, or the rear end 10 of the chassis 2 as shown in Fig. and Fig. 6. In this way the pressurised air generating system 1 can be mounted at either a rear end of a tractor vehicle, or at a front end of a tractor vehicle as required.
The upper hitch element 21 on the A-frame 12 comprises an upwardly open hook 26 with an associated pivoting locking arm 27. The hook 26 is engagable with a complementary mounting rail 28 of the upper hitch element 23 on the chassis 2, the locking arm 27 being operable to lock the hook 26 in engagement with the mounting rail 28.
The lower hitch element 22 on the A-frame 12 comprises a pair of spaced-apart mounting pins 30. Each mounting pin 30 is mounted between an associated pair of spaced-apart support flanges 31 which project outwardly from the inner face 20 of the A-frame 12. Each mounting pin 30 is engagable with a complementary downwardly open mounting hook 32 of the associated lower hitch element 24 on the chassis 2.
The air compressor assembly 3 is mounted on the chassis 2 within a housing 35 having a hinged top cover 36. The air compressor assembly 3 is shown schematically in Fig. 11. An air compressor 38 is mounted on the chassis 2 within the housing 35 and is drivably connected to the drive shaft 4 by means of a drive chain 39. Ambient air is delivered to the air compressor 38 through an air cleaner 40. Pressurised air is discharged from the air compressor 38 through a high pressure air line 42 to an oil separator 43 where oil entrained in the air is removed before pressurised air is discharged through a pressurised air discharge line 44 for driving pneumatically operated machinery and devices.
Oil is delivered through an oil line 46 through an oil filter 47 from the oil separator 43 back to the air compressor 38. A proportion or all of the oil may be circulated through a fan operated oil cooler 50 via a supply line 51 and return line 52 connected to the oil filter 47 to cool the oil as necessary.
The air compressor assembly 3 sits on the chassis 2 which comprises a rectangular platform 55 with downwardly projecting feet 56.
In use, the pressurised air generating system 1 of the invention can be mounted by means of the A-frame on the three-point linkage of a tractor at either a rear end or a front end of the tractor with one of the drive inputs 5 connected to the PTO on the tractor vehicle. The PTO drives the compressor 38 to generate pressurised air as required for use.
Advantageously the invention provides a pressurised air generating system which can be quickly and easily mounted on and transported by a tractor vehicle at a front end or at a rear end of the tractor vehicle, whichever is most convenient. It is relatively cheap to manufacture as a separate diesel power pack is not required to drive the air compressor. For transport the system can conveniently be mounted at a front of the tractor vehicle and other machinery towed behind the tractor vehicle at the same time.
Referring now to Figs. 12 to 16 there is illustrated a pressurised air generating system according to a second embodiment of the invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 60. This is largely similar to the pressurised air generating system 1 described previously and like parts are assigned the same reference numerals. In this case an alternative mounting assembly 7 is provided. An upstanding triangular mounting frame 63 is mounted at the front end 9 and at the rear end 10 of the chassis 2. Upper ends of each mounting frame 63 are interconnected by a rail 64 extending therebetween. A quick-hitch A-frame 65 is releasably engagable with an associated receiver 66 mounted on each mounting frame 63 so that the system 60 can be mounted on a three-point linkage at either a front or a rear of a tractor vehicle.
In this specification the terms “comprise, comprises, comprised and comprising” or any variation thereof and the terms “include, includes, included and including" or any variation thereof are considered to be totally interchangeable and they should all be afforded the widest possible interpretation and vice versa.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail within the scope of the appended claims.
