It has been shown that once water flow out of the fish pen is established, it can be maintained by water flowing through the outside. When the pressure inside the fish pen is greater than the pressure outside the fish pen, closed fish pen walls formed of fabric-like material will stretch. When water begins to flow out of such a closed fish pen, the bag-like walls will begin to collapse. This happens especially in the lower part of the fish pen, while the upper part of the fish pen is kept in shape by the fish pen's buoyancy system. As a result, the volume of the fish pen will decrease, and this will have a stressful effect on the fish kept in the fish pen.
