In one embodiment, the special effects vehicle 18 can provide navigation or guidance information to the special effects control system 20 for use as feedback in determining when to trigger special effects. For example, special effects can be triggered at specific geographic locations, GPS coordinates, or relative to specific landmarks or points of interest. Accordingly, the special effects vehicle 18 can use location information determined by positioning and/or telemetry circuitry 68, such as GPS information accessed from a GPS chip, triangulation information from radio communications, and/or feedback from one or more cameras, positioning sensors, or proximity sensors on the special effects vehicle 18. The positioning and/or telemetry circuitry 68 can also provide feedback to keep the special effects vehicle 18 outside a specific boundary to prevent guests from interfering with the vehicle. The special effects vehicle 18 can also include one or more power sources 72, such as batteries, solar cells, or inductive coupling devices. As disclosed, the special effects vehicle 18 can be implemented as a tetherless platform for special effects by using an onboard power source (such as a self-charging or rechargeable power source). However, in some embodiments, the special effects vehicle 18 can be coupled to the power source via a tether.

In one embodiment, special effects material 76 may be a roll of ribbon or a copy of a released paper message. The triggering may be mediated by the special effects control system 20. For example, an activation signal (e.g., a release signal) for releasing the special effects material may be transmitted from the special effects control system 20 (see FIG2 ) to the special effects module 70. Furthermore, the special effects module controller 74 can activate a release mechanism 80 (e.g., by opening a valve, releasing a door, activating a fan or piston, piercing a cover, etc.) to allow the special effects material 76 to be dispersed in the desired location. The special effects material 76 can be contained under pressure, such as via a CO2 cartridge mounted in fluid communication with the housing 78, so that opening the release mechanism 80 causes an explosion or discharge. In one embodiment, the special effects material 76 is configured within the module 70 for a single use. That is, opening the release mechanism 80 (e.g., opening a valve, activating a blower, or piercing a seal) releases all or most of the material 76. The release mechanism 80 can also be closed after a preset period of time, and in some embodiments, before dispensing all or most of the special effects material 76, to allow for multiple uses. The special effects module 70 can also include a sensor 81 or other feedback device that provides data to the controller 74, which in turn can provide data to the ground controller regarding the amount of special effects material 76 remaining in the housing 78. The sensor 81 can be a pressure sensor, an optical sensor, a weight sensor, etc. For example, an optical sensor can provide fill level information within the special effects module. A change in the optical reading can indicate that the material is below a certain threshold fill level. In other embodiments, a feedback device can provide data regarding a false release (e.g., a failure of the release mechanism 80 to properly open or a failure to sense an expected decrease in the fill of the special effects material after release). Such false release data can in turn trigger vehicle maintenance.

In one example, the live actors can be surrounded by smoke when arriving at a specific stage position within a certain time frame. In another embodiment, the live actor can wear a radio transmission device that is configured to transmit a release signal to the special effects vehicle when a button or other triggering device is activated. The activation of the special effect can also be initiated in real time by the performance technician. In another embodiment, the animated character 120 can include a feedback device that communicates with the special effects vehicle 18c or 18d to generate a specific special effect. Such a live performance can also include a quite complicated stage setting, such as a tower or a catwalk 124, and the special effects vehicle 18b can have a more granular position control to allow for special effects in relatively difficult-to-reach stage settings. In addition, since such a performance is usually designed to be seen from multiple angles, the special effects vehicle 18b can surround such a stage setting to produce special effects visible at multiple audience angles.
