Abstract

Method for the complete recovery of metal oxides from red mud which contains valuable oxides in high concentrations, such as titanium and aluminum oxides as well as iron oxides, which can be used as starting material for the production of ferrites. The proposed process provides ultra-pure products, in particular silica and calcium sulfate (starting materials for the cement industry), titanium dioxide (pigments), alum (pharmaceutical use) and magnetite (electric and electronic applications). The final product of the process is a solution of sodium aluminate, which can be recycled in the Bayer method. All the reagents used, i.e. hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide or ammonia, are completely recycled with simple distillation. More complex reagents or chelating factors can also be recycled, while the intermediate products are used in subsequent steps of the process. The energy requirements are low, since heat is emitted in certain steps. Finally, after completion of the process no residue of red mud is present (full exploitation).
