Abstract
Method and system for the recording of, and aiding in, the regeneration of peripheral nerves after injury, which comprise a stimulation electrode which can be implanted in the central part of the nerve, at least one recording electrode which can beimplanted in the peripheral part of the nerve, an implantable electronic unit, an implantable device that releases regeneration-stimulating agents, such as a micro-pump, and a computational unit which is preferably positioned extra-corporeally for the transmission of data and energy to the electronic unit. The electric signals produced by the peripheral part of the injured nerve, after suitable electric stimulation of the central part thereof, are recorded on various time moments. The analysis of the recorded electric signals is used for the evaluation of the state and progress of the axons under regeneration, from which evaluation various control parameters are determined. The said parameters are used by the electronic unit in order to adjust the release of the stimulating agents so that the therapy is effective, maintaining at the same time the administration of agents at safe levels.
