Abstract
The invention describes a device destined for the cleaning and separation of hydrogen produced by reforming of liquid or gaseous combustibles. Said device is composed of a monolithic construction having into its pores a hydrogen- permeable membrane. The monolith is manufactured from porous ceramic material (alumina or cordierite) while the membrane is a high-density material (such as alumina, zeolite, silicon etc). The reforming mixture containing hydrogen and other gases is conducted to alternate cells of the monolith, while the rest of the cells collect the hydrogen diffused therein through the membrane. A suitable catalyst causing the shift reaction of the carbon monoxide is deposited on the inner walls of the cells wherein the reforming gas is diffused. A suitable catalyst causing the methanisation reaction of the carbon monoxide is deposited on the inner walls of the cells collecting hydrogen so that the carbon monoxide penetrating the membrane is converted into methane. Said device is particularly compact, it offers a great surface for the hydrogen diffusion and it essentially produces clean carbon monoxide-free hydrogen to be drawn directly into cells of any type of combustible.
