992,826. Pipe joints; flexible pipes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 22, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 20492/63. Headings F2G and F2P. A flexible tubular joint comprises two or more tubular sections 26 ... 31 having substantially coincident axes and having annular sealing means 43, 44 between adjacent sections for sealing these sections in a fluid-tight manner, adjacent ends of the sections carrying connector means forming an integral part of the sections and adapted to be engaged to prevent separation of the sections, the connector means being positioned such that when engaged with one another the sealing means is in compression and permit limited deflection of the axis of one section relative to the axis of the other section. As shown in Fig. 3, each section has inwardly and outwardlyextending lugs 35, 36, the lugs 35 on one section lockingly engaging the lugs 36 on the next adjacent section and upon relative rotation of the two sections; the lugs 36 have slots 42 in which are positioned locking plugs 41 to secure the sections against inadvertent rotation. The deflection of one section 30, for example, relatively to the adjacent section 31 may be controlled by limiting the width of the spaces 45a between the lugs 36 of the section 30 and the adjacent inner wall of the section 31, and spaces 46a between the lugs 35 of the section 31 and the adjacent outer wall of the section 30; alternatively, there are cooperating shoulders 47, 48 on adjacent sections.
