Abstract

991, 889. Determining the relative quantities of fluid mixture constituents. COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Nov. 30, 1961 [Nov. 30, 1960], No. 41101/60. Heading G1N. In an arrangement for determining the concentration of a constituent of a gas mixture, the mixture and a gas containing a known amount of the constituent are passed alternately for predetermined periods through the electrolyte of a dropping mercury polarograph. In a polarograph cell, Fig. 1 (Prov.) the mercury droplets are delivered by a tube 7 directed upwards at an angle of at least 45 degrees and the gas is injected by a pipe 10 through a porous plug 11. A zinc/sodium acetate reference electrode having a pH of at least 5. 5 and terminating in a sintered plug 6 is provided with its end projecting into the electrolyte, which for the detection of oxygen may comprise a solution of 0. 05 NKC, with 1% anhydrous Na 3 PO 4 . Temperature responsive elements such as thermistors may be placed in contact with the main body of the electrolyte for compensation purposes, and a vent 13 is provided for the escaping gas. In a modification described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown) the reference electrode is silver/silver chloride, which may be placed close to the dropping mercury electrode, the gas is injected by a nozzle against the wall of the electrolyte containing stem, and, the mercury drops are collected in a narrow bore trap which opens through the base of the stem. The gas flow is controlled by a uniselector timing circuit Fig. 3 (not shown) and electromagnetic valves. The electrolyte comprises 25. 2 gms of disodium hydrogen phosphate hydrate and 4 gms of potassium chloride, its pH value being about 8. 5. The temperature and humidity of the injected gas may be controlled. Gas injection rates and component values are given. Specification 936,724 is referred to.
