Abstract

A granulated fertilizer comprises ammonium nitrate, potassium chloride or urea is provided with a coating of ammonium phosphate to reduce its caking tendency. A desired product having a particle size of 1.5-4 mm. is produced in a cyclic process by passing a melt, solution or slurry of a raw fertilizer material containing 0.5-25% of water and undersize and ground oversize product optionally together with solid raw fertilizer material into a granulator, passing the resulting granules into a rotary dryer with lifting flights in co-current with hot drying gas, coating the granules in the dryer by injecting a slurry of mono/di ammonium phosphate containing 8-25% of water into the dryer near its inlet, sieving to obtain the desired product, and recycling undersize and ground oversize product. The moisture content at the outlet of the granulator and dryer may be up to 4% and about 0.3% respectively. The ratio of recycled material to product may be 2-5 to 1. The granulator may be a rotary drum or paddle mixer. The slurry may be atomized into the dryer in a surrounding stream of air. The product may be coated with 2% of china clay.
