Abstract

In a method of machining by chip removal, as for example in a lathe, relative reciprocation between the cutting tool and workpiece is effected transversely to the cutting tool axis. The frequency of reciprocation is related to the speed of rotation of the workpiece such that an out-of-phase relationship is produced wherein reciprocations during one whole period of rotation differ from the number of reciprocations in the next whole period of rotation so as to produce a non-uniform chip. The cutting tool is reciprocated by fluid means 17, 19, controlled, via a control valve 26, by valves 24 and 28 which are actuated by cams 6 on cam discs 5 and 4, respectively, from the machine spindle 3. The out-of-phase relationship is effected by valve 29 which is actuated by a cam disc 10 which is driven through gears 7 and 8 at half spindle speed. Also, the cams 6 are identical but are offset in relation to one another so that a cam crest on disc 5 corresponds to a trough on cam disc 4. The tool 22 therefore completes a reciprocation which is staggered by half a reciprocation with respect to the preceding revolution of the workpiece. A chip produced from a workpiece by this method is shown in Fig. 5. In an alternative form of operation an electrical control installation is incorporated in which impulses, from electrical contacts associated with the cams on the machine spindle, are fed into an amplifier which is connected to a control valve to effect reciprocation of the fluid means attached to the cutting tool. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the method of chip removal is applied to a boring machine. The tool reciprocations are effected by mechanical means in the form of a bell cam and the phase and frequency between the tool reciprocations and rotation is effected by selecting suitable gear ratios. The method described is applicable to reciprocation of the tool or workpiece and the rotation of the tool or workpiece.
