Abstract
990,827. Storing liquefied gases. HYDROCARBON RESEARCH Inc. Jan. 15, 1962 [Jan. 16, 1961], No. 1471/62. Heading F4P. A storage tank for liquefied gas, e.g. methane or natural gas, comprises spaced external and internal tanks 12 and 10, Figs. 2 and 4, the base 18 of the tank 12 being supported on a foundation 16 and the base 22 of the tank 10 being mounted on and spaced from the base 18 by insulation 20 on the latter. The wall of the tank 10 is uninsulated and is spaced from insulation 34, 36 on the wall of the tank 12 a distance sufficient to permit personal inspection of and access to the tank 10 and the insulation 34, 36. The tank 12 has a roof 46, Fig. 2, flexibly sealed to the wall thereof, the tank 12 and the wall of the tank 10 has a cover 23 sealed thereto and flexibly sealed to the wall of the tank 12. Columns 24 extend from the base 22 to support the cover 23 and columns 48 extend from the cover 23 to support the roof 46. The wall of the tank 12 is preferably made of carbon steel and the wall of the tank 10, the base 22 of the latter and the columns 24 are preferably made of aluminium. The insulation 20 is preferably balsa wood and is overlaid with planking 21. The cover 23 of the tank 10 is mounted on girders 25, Fig. 3, and includes an aluminium plate 26 which is overlaid with planking 27, insulation 28, e.g. rockwood and planking 31. The cover is preferably uniformly loaded by up to 10 to 150 lbs. per sq. ft., e.g. by bricks 30 Each insulation layer 34 is preferably in the form of permanently mounted blocks of foam glass or cork and each layer 36 is in the form of granular or fibrous material, e.g. rockwool, packed in bags of impervious material and held in place by cribbing 40. A hatchway 44, Fig. 2, in the roof 46 provides access to the space 42 between the insulation 34, 36 and the wall of the tank 10, and a hatchway 47 in the cover 23 provides access to the tank 10. The flexible seal provided between the cover 23 of the tank 10 and the wall of the tank 12 is in the form of a gas seal 32. In the event of rupture of the tank 10 the tank 12 is adapted to temporarily retain the liquefied gas. The roof 46 of the tank 12 is flexibly sealed to the wall of the latter by a liquid seal 54.
