999,022. Delivering measured quantities of fluent solid materials. BURGESS ENGINEERING (STOKE ON TRENT) Ltd. May 27, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 46401/62. Heading B8N. In a machine for making cakes, pies &c., means for depositing measured quantities of " filling " comprises a table 13 reciprocable below a hopper 10 and provided with a measuring compartment 132, a suction device for withdrawing filling from the compartment and holding it in a suspended condition by suction (Fig. 5), and means for " breaking " the vacuum when the table 13 has moved away so that the filling 11 is released and dropped on to a sheet of dough 12 or into a baking receptacle. The example shown comprises four hoppers 10 and the table 13 has four compartments 132 co-operating with suction devices in the form of lengths of concertina hose 15 connected to a common suction hood 17. Suction holds the filling 11 in contact with grids 191 carried by caps 19. When the table 13 is withdrawn to the position seen in Fig. 6 (not shown), the caps 19 are moved downwardly to break contact with sealing washers 153, downward movement of the hoses 15 being limited by means illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown). Fig. 1 (not shown), shows linkage mechanism for synchronizing these movements. In a modification (not shown) the caps 19 are fixed to the hoses 15 and mechanically operated valve means breaks the vacuum when required.
