998,866. High-voltage switches. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Sept. 21, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 35964/62. Heading H2B. [Also in Division H1] In any electrical apparatus in which electrical arcs or discharges occur in an atmosphere of an electronegative dielectric halogenated gas such as sulphur hexafluoride or difluorodichloromethane, insulating members are formed mainly of an inorganic substance which comprises one of the chemical constituents of the halogenated gas either in a simple or combined state. Thus, in an atmosphere of sulphur hexafluoride, the insulating members may be of solid sulphur or a solid mineral fluoride such as calcium fluoride or a mixture of such fluorides. A particular example consists of a mixture of 80% calcium fluoride and 20% lead fluoride, dry-pressed and baked at 780‹ C. for one hour. Glasses having a basis of beryllium or lead fluoride are also mentioned. The insulating material may be in the form of a covering on a known insulating material. The invention is stated to be applicable to circuit-breakers, spark gaps generally, transformers, waveguides, coaxial cables, &c.
