Abstract
998,089. Metallic and silicon carbides. T. I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. Feb. 2, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1960], No. 37775/60. Heading.C1A. Refractory fibres of Ta, Mo, W or Si carbides are produced by forming a cloth or group of fibres of carbon and converting them to the carbide by heating them in the presence of the metal or Si in an inert atmosphere or vacuum. The group of fibres or cloth of carbon may be formed by heating a cellulosic or other organic material, e.g. viscose rayon, in an inert atmosphere. The metal may be present as a powder in which the carbon fibres are embedded, or as an electrically conducting filament which is embedded in the fibres. Carbide fibres may be used to reinforce ceramics or plastics, or as thermal insulation. The manufacture of all four carbides is disclosed.
