Abstract
998,071. Making heat exchangers; welding by pressure. H. KRESS. July 14, 1961, No. 25642/61. Headings B3A and B3R. In resistance welding a corrugated strip to a tube, strip or sheet, an electrode having radially arranged contact tips and the wall are moved so that the tips in turn engage the bases of the corrugations and spot-weld them to the wall. A strip 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, is corrugated by toothed wheels 3, 4 and fed through a guide 10 on to a tube 1 supported on an electrode 5. A base 7 is spot-welded to the tube by tip 6<SP>1</SP> of a rotatable star electrode 6, the tube and electrode are then rotated to a position so that tip 6<SP>1</SP> clears the corrugated strip and then the tube is held stationary. The next corrugation is compressed by the tip 6<SP>2</SP>, the tube is rotated backwardly until the correct base width is obtained and the base is spotwelded. The backward rotation may be eliminated if the electrode is lifted off the corrugated strip or by positioning the electrode so that the radius thereof passing through the weld point is offset in the direction of rotation of the electrode from the axis of the tube. In a modification also employing the offset weld position the strip 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, is corrugated by a lever 17 having an axially movable pin 19. In another embodiment corrugated strips are provided on a flat wall 20, Fig. 5, a pre-corrugated strip being fed and then welded by tip 23<SP>1</SP> of electrode 23, the electrode is then moved axially out of engagement with the strip, is rotated to bring the tip 23<SP>1</SP> into position 23<SP>11</SP> and is then moved axially into engagement with the strip. On further rotation the next tip 23<SP>21</SP> presses the next loop into the welding position above a roller electrode 22. The corrugated strip may be welded to a flat strip bent around a roller electrode which may rotate about an axis parallelto or at right angles to the axis of the upper electrode wheel.
