998,034. Block-bottom bags. K. H. HONSEF. June 18, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 24272/63. Heading B8K. The folded-in side flaps 16 . . . 19 (Fig. 5) of a cross-bottom bag of plastics foil do not meet, and the bottom is completed by a closure sheet 8, 8a which may lie either over or under the side flaps. To facilitate welding the closure sheet to the flaps, without welding the bottom of the bag to its walls, the thickness of whichever portion of foil is outermost on the bottom is less than that of the underlying foils. In the arrangement illustrated, the closure sheets 8, 8a are formed by a length of plastics tubing so providing a double thickness for the closure sheet. The bottom sheet may, however, consist of a laminate with the outer layer thinner and having a lower welding temperature. Where the closure sheet overlies the side flaps 16. . . 19 it may be a laminate with a thinner layer adjacent the side flaps. The closure sheet is also welded at 9... 12 to the end portions of the cross bottom. A valve sheet 15 (Fig. 7), may be welded at 13, 14 to the closure sheet 8a before this is placed on the bag bottom.
