997,950. Ventilating shoes. T. O. LARSON. July 21, 1961 [July 28, 1960], No. 26517/61. Heading A3B. Air entering a heel cavity through apertures 20 is passed through a shank cavity to a toe cavity and through apertures 24 to the forepart of the foot by the rolling, heel-to-toe, movement of the foot, means in the shank cavity normally allowing passage of air but sealing the cavity to prevent back-flow of air when pressure is exerted by the arch portion of the foot. This means may comprise a ridge 26 extending from the upper wall of the cavity part way towards the lower wall, or sponge rubber packing. In the construction shown the cavity is formed between the insole 12 and outsole 14. In a further embodiment the cavity is formed between the spaced upper and lower layers of a loose insole having a narrow shank portion. This insole may include additional apertures distributed between the heel and toe apertures, and pockets for supports for the arch and/or forepart of the foot.
