Abstract
997,518. Air cushion vehicles. SOC. BERTIN & CIE. Jan. 16, 1962 [Jan. 17, 1961; June 30, 1961], No. 1539/62. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle comprises a platform 1, which may be mounted on wheels 14 to give it directional stability, the undersurface of the platform carrying a plurality of flexible skirts 2 each comprising a plenum chamber enclosing a supporting gas cushion which is generated by an ejector 3, 4 connected to the gas outlet of a gas turbine engine 5. Each skirt is attached to the platform undersurface by a bellows 11 and is mounted by a gimbal 7-10 on a flotation tank 21. A control lever 12 is coupled to all of the gimbal supports so that simultaneous or differential inclination of the skirts may be effected for propulsion or control of the vehicle. The flexibility of the skirts enables them to deflect over waves or obstacles. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) a single power unit drives a pair of fans which deliver air through ducts to the plenum chambers, the ducts being sub-divided by radial panels and provided with controllable vanes whereby air may be delivered selectively to the various plenum chambers. In other embodiments the skirt is formed as shown in Fig. 4 by a series of concentric members 2a-2d having different lengths and degrees of stiffness, the air being supplied at the centre 33 only or separately to each annular passage. In a still further embodiment the skirt is wholly formed as a bellows provided with mechanism which raises and lowers it as obstacles are encountered. Other skirts are frusto-conical and one may be formed with inflatable elements whereby it may be extended or contracted. A porous baffle may be provided below the air inlet ensuring uniform pressure distribution within the cushion. The platform may have a peripheral skirt surrounding the skirts of the individual plenum chambers. Vents may be provided to spill air from the conduits supplying individual plenum chambers, whereby control at lift-off and touchdown as well as directional control may be provided.
