Abstract
In a method of reducing the coke requirement of a cupola furnace a hydrocarbon fuel is burnt externally to the furnace and the combustion gases are injected into the furnace above the level of the air-blast tuveres, the rate of air flow supplied through the tuyeres being at least 60% of the base flow rate, i.e. the rate when operating conventionally. The combustion products may be injected at level where the charge has a temperature within the range 1600-2700 DEG F.
