Abstract
996,946. Casting composite articles. L'EQUIPMENT THERMIQUE S.A. Dec. 27, 1963 [Jan. 2, 1963], No. 51040/63. Heading B3F. A method of filling heater tubes 6 incorporating resistors 7 embedded in a metal, e.g. silver, aluminium or copper, comprises the step of drawing into the heater tube and an axial extension 13 thereof a column of molten metal appreciably higher than the heater tube itself and then causing this column to crystallize from the bottom upwards. The heater tubes form banks and simulate rods used as nuclear fuel for the study of heat exchange problems. The molten metal from the melting pot 3 is drawn into the heated tube 6 by suction, a condenser 16 protecting the pump 15 from metal vapour. The solidification is controlled by a cylinder 17 which incorporates independently operable heaters 18-23 and which is vertically movable by means of a cable 29. A water jacket 10 around the metal inlet pipe 9 permits freezing of a plug of metal in the inlet pipe after the tube has been filled. The inner wall of the tube 6 and the outer wall of the resistor 7 may be electrolytically metallized.
