Abstract
A bright-drying coating composition consists essentially of a solution of (1) monocamphylpolysiloxane and (2) a volatile liquid organic solvent. The siloxane is generally used in amount of from 1 to 20 pts. (by wt.) per 100 pts. of total solution. The camphylsiloxane may contain minor amounts of other Si-bonded hydrocarbon groups and alkoxy or hydroxyl groups. Solvents specified are turpentine, mineral spirits, Stoddard's solvent, kerosene, ethylene glycol monoethylether, diethylether, n-butylether, beta-chloroethylether, isopropyl alcohol, 2-ethylhexanol, n-butyl alcohol, chlorothene, cyclohexane, decane, cyclohexene, toluene and xylene. The compositions may also contain from 0.1 to 5 parts (per 100 pts. of solution) of a wax, e.g. beeswax, spermaceti, paraffin wax, Japan wax and Gersthofen V-wax. Other optional ingredients are shellac, perfumes, dyes, pigments, insecticidal and bactericidal agents, and additives to aid in spreading the solution. In the example, monocamphylpolysiloxane coatings are compared with monocyclohexylpolysiloxane coatings. The camphyltrichlorosilane (C10H17SiCl3) used to prepare the camphylsiloxane used in the example, was made by reacting in a bomb at 188 DEG C. for 20 hours, a mixture of camphrene, trichlorosilane and chloroplatinic acid in isopropyl alcohol, with subsequent distillation of camphyltrichlorosilane under reduced pressure, as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,533,240.
